Food, Ana de Armas, exiles, plus the Catholic Church and the Cuban government (+Español)
“How much does a well-rounded meal cost me today, right now?” a good friend asks, and then comments, “In the fifties that dish cost about 20 cents in any inn. A full meal had rice, beans, meat or mincemeat and some well-done tostónes (green plantains),” he explains. “Now, everyday food is flirting with collapse.”
In Cuba, food has become more difficult to find by the day. The rice is not enough and the quality… The chicken for the ration book is for those under 14 years of age. As for those over that age it flew with its tasty wings to two destinations: as part of the monthly combo (as of right now) at a higher price and in other stores, not the warehouses, and to the stores in MLC (hard currency). Allow me to point out: the press announced that the Collective Law Firms have suspended processing certificates due to the large amount pending to be managed in the corresponding agencies. This deals with the legalization of documents, many of them associated with immigration procedures. There is something curious happening, though, because law firms that charge for their services in hard currency have continued to carry out said procedures. Apparently when there is hard currency involved the processing channels are not crowded. “Mighty powerful that Mr. Money,” is the channel that links food with the satisfaction of any type of need, including bureaucratic services.
And in the midst of this wide and deepening crisis, Ana de Armas, the excellent and beautiful Cuban actress based in the US, arrived in Cuba to celebrate her birthday with family and close friends. She did not give any press interviews. It was a family visit. But on the other side of the Straits, she’s been riddled with bursts of offensive, disqualifying comments. The radicalized politicization of the “seasoned fighters for the freedom of Cuba,” the vast majority who left the island on airplanes and without any problems with the island’s authorities. While living in Cuba, many paraded on the May 1s or on July 26. Others had the means at their disposal (microphones and/or cameras) to call criticize or fight the government here at home, or publicly join (not 90 miles away) the demands for the freedom of the prisoners, or publicly demonstrate in different ways. It’s much easier and comfortable to carry out this war from a distance. Traveling to Cuba to hug one’s family members: Is that a crime against the country. Let’s stop the nonsense: the real objective of almost all of these campaigns and their radicalization is NOT Cuba. Radicalization pays tribute to electoral campaigns where these gentlepeople reside.
I hope that Ana de Armas and her family have enjoyed the celebration and the meeting.
Speaking of meetings, I read a brief note about the one carried out by high government officials with representatives of the Catholic Church, HERE, which I reproduce below.
April 28, 2023: Conference of Bishops meeting with the Cuban Government
THE NOTE FOLLOWS
As was known by official press, on the afternoon of last Wednesday, the 26th, the President of the Republic Dr. Miguel-Díaz Canel Bermúdez, the Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz and other members of the Government and the Party held a meeting with the Catholic Bishops of Cuba.
From the words of greeting by Monsignor Emilio Aranguren Echeverría, Bishop of Holguín and President of the Episcopal Conference, the Bishops presented their criteria and vision of the reality that the Cuban people are experiencing. In accordance with the usual procedure in this type of meeting, the Bishops did not stop at specific situations of the Church, but shared with all respect, sincerity and clarity their concerns and assessments about the current moment in which we live.
In the same way, they listened to the information, criteria and evaluations, both from the President and the Prime Minister, who also broadly explained their visions and future prospects regarding the issues addressed.
The Cuban episcopate appreciates the possibility of the exchange, for the seriousness in which it was developed, the opportunity to be heard, and in turn, values the importance and convenience of this experience, also for the future.
It was an occasion for the Bishops to assure the authorities of their commitment to the Cuban people and to everything that favors a more serene climate of peace, harmony, respect for all and hope”.
As I am not deeply knowledgeable about the relations between the Cuban Catholic Church and the state, I asked a friend to give me a brief opinion on the statement. Here are excerpts of his reply:
- Relations with the Church, in recent times, are tense. The Cuban government has preferred to keep the channels with Rome open and ignore the Creole hierarchy as much as possible. Now they exchange.
- Was this meeting at the request of the government, of the Catholic hierarchy, or promoted by Rome, or by a conjunction of all based on the critical moment that the country is experiencing? I don’t have that information. I think that, apart from the promoter, everything responds to the crisis that the country is experiencing. Let me clarify, though, every time Cuba has experienced critical moments, the government has summoned the Catholic Church and other religions and denominations. For example: Faced with the collapse of the socialist camp and the crisis of the Special Period (1990s), the government took two measures: it changed its status from atheist to secularism and opened the doors of the PCC (Cuba’s Communist Party) to all believers.
- The position of the church, in my opinion, is in the paragraph in the official note that states,”they [the Bishops] did not stop at specific situations of the church” and they presented their vision and analysis of the undeniable integral crisis that they are suffering. I believe that the analysis of the church and their path for a solution differs from that of the government.
- Regarding the prisoners and a possible solution, surely it received important attention. It is known that the Cuban church has been aware of this matter — of the imprisoned people and their families. The church, I think, is willing to participate in a solution. Mediating is an attribute of its own. But, I insist, my opinion, without much information, for the church, the prisoners are a consequence of the crisis that covers the entire spectrum of national life.

“¿Cuánto me costaría hoy, ahora mismo una completa?”, me pregunta y comenta un buen amigo. “En los años cincuenta costaba unos 20 centavos ese plato en una fonda. La completa llevaba arroz, frijoles, carne ripiá o picadillo y algún tostón bien tostoneao”, explica. “Ahora, la comida diaria está coqueteando con el colapso.”
AQUÍ, la comida se ha puesto cada día más difícil. El arroz no alcanza y de la calidad… El pollo por la libreta de racionamiento queda para las dietas y los menores de 14 años, para los mayores de esa edad voló con sus alitas sabrosas hacia dos destinos: como parte del combo mensual (hasta ahora) a un mayor precio y en otros comercios, no las bodegas, y a las tiendas en MLC (moneda dura). Punto y seguido, un detalle: la prensa anunció que los Bufetes Colectivos han suspendido tramitar certificados debido a la gran cantidad pendientes por gestionar en los organismos correspondientes. Se trata de la legalización de documentos, muchos de ellos asociados a trámites migratorios. CURIOSO: Los bufetes que cobran sus servicios en monda dura, SÍ continuarán realizando dichas tramitaciones. Para estas monedas, los canales no están tupidos. “Poderoso caballero es Don dinero”, es el canal que vincula alimentación con la satisfacción de cualquier tipo de necesidad, incluyendo servicios burocráticos. En buen cubano: Tin tiene, Tin vale, si Tin no tiene…
Y en medio de esta ancha y profunda crisis, Ana de Armas, excelente y bella actriz cubana radicada en los EE.UU, llegó a Cuba para celebrar su cumpleaños. Lo festejó con su familia y amistades cercanas. No dio entrevista a la prensa, visita familiar. Pero ALLÁ la han acribillado con ráfagas de comentarios ofensivos, descalificadores. La radicalizada politización de los “aguerridos combatientes por la libertad de Cuba”, la inmensa mayoría de estos partieron de la isla por vía aérea normal, sin problema alguno con las autoridades de la Isla. Muchos desfilaron los primeros de mayo o los 26 de julio, otros tuvieron medios a su disposición (micrófonos y/o cámaras) para llamar al combate desde la propia tierra o sumarse públicamente (no a 90 millas) a los reclamos por la libertad de los presos o manifestarse públicamente de distintas maneras. Fácil y cómoda esta modalidad de guerra a distancia ajustada convenientemente a la fecha de la partida de cada uno. Viajar a Cuba para abrazar a la familia: crimen de lesa patria. Dejémonos de cuentos: el objetivo real de la casi totalidad de estas campañas y de su radicalización NO es Cuba. La radicalización tributa a campañas electorales donde radican estos señores.
Deseo que Ana de Armas y su familia hayan disfrutado de la celebración y del encuentro.
Hablando de encuentros, leo un abreve nota sobre el efectuado por la alta dirigencia gubernamental con los representantes de la iglesia católica de AQUÍ, que a continuación reproduzco aclarando que lo subrayado es mío.

Cómo se conoció por medios oficiales de prensa, en la tarde del pasado miércoles 26, el Presidente de la República Dr. Miguel-Díaz Canel Bermúdez, el Primer Ministro Ing. Manuel Marrero Cruz y otros miembros del Gobierno y del Partido sostuvieron un encuentro con los Obispos Católicos de Cuba.
A partir de las palabras de saludo por parte de Mons. Emilio Aranguren Echeverría, Obispo de Holguín y Presidente de la Conferencia Episcopal, los Obispos expusieron sus criterios y visión sobre la realidad que está viviendo el pueblo cubano. De acuerdo al habitual proceder en este tipo de encuentro, los Obispos no se detuvieron en situaciones concretas de la Iglesia, sino que compartieron con todo respeto, sinceridad y claridad sus inquietudes y valoraciones acerca del momento actual que vivimos.
De igual forma escucharon las informaciones, criterios y valoraciones, tanto del Sr. Presidente como del Primer Ministro, quienes también expusieron con amplitud sus visiones y las perspectivas de futuro respecto a las cuestiones abordadas.
El episcopado cubano agradece la posibilidad del intercambio, por la seriedad en que se desarrolló, la oportunidad de ser escuchados, y a su vez, valora la importancia y conveniencia de esta experiencia, también de cara al futuro.
Fue ocasión para que los Obispos renovaran a las autoridades su compromiso por el pueblo cubano y con todo aquello que favorezca un clima más sereno de paz, concordia, respeto de todos y esperanza.
Como no soy conocedor profundo de las relaciones entre la iglesia católica cubana y el estado, solicité a un amigo me opinara brevemente sobre el comunicado y me respondió:
- Las relaciones en los últimos tiempos son tensas. El gobierno cubano ha preferido mantener abiertos los canales con Roma y obviar en lo posible a la jerarquía criolla. Ahora intercambian.
- ¿Esta reunión fue a solicitud gubernamental, de la jerarquía Católica, promovida por Roma o por la conjunción de todos a partir del momento crítico que vive el país? No tengo información. Opino que, al margen del promotor, todo responde a la crisis que vive el país. Te aclaro, cada vez que Cuba ha estado viviendo momentos críticos, el gobierno ha convocado a la iglesia católica y a otras religiones y denominaciones. Un ejemplo: Ante el desplome del campo socialista y la crisis del Período Especial (década de los años 90), tomó dos medidas: cambió de estado ateo a laico y abrió las puertas del PCC a todos los creyentes.
- La posición de la iglesia, a mi juicio, está en el párrafo subrayado en la nota oficial donde dice “no se detuvieron (los Obispos) en situaciones concretas de la iglesia” y plantearon su visión y análisis de la innegable crisis integral que padece Cuba y es evidente. Opino que el análisis de la iglesia y la vía de solución difiere de la gubernamental.
- En cuanto a lo que me preguntas sobre los presos y una posible solución, seguramente tuvo importante atención. Es sabido que la iglesia cubana ha estado al tanto de este asunto, de las personas encarceladas y sus familias. La iglesia, pienso, está dispuesta a participar de una solución. Mediar es un atributo propio. Pero, insisto, mi opinión sin información alguna, para la iglesia los presos son una consecuencia de la crisis que abarca a todo el espectro de la vida nacional.
