Sen. Rubio, have you forgotten where you came from?

MIAMI – Notice to the immigrant community: Sen. Marco Rubio is at it again.

Florida is overpopulated with chameleons. You see them everywhere in different colors, shapes and sizes. But its biggest multi-colored (figuratively speaking) lizard may be our own junior Senator, Marco Rubio. The same Marco who changes his stripes every time he has to and before whatever group he speaks to.

To date, we still don’t know on what side Sen. Rubio falls on the issue of immigration, and especially the touchy subject of the millions of undocumented residents from all over the world who live in the U.S. A classic chameleon Rubio move was when he co-sponsored a bill in the U.S. Senate last year that passed with 67 votes. It had signees from both aisles – all the Democrats in that august body and a number of Republicans too. Yet after his own bill had passed – and then stalled forever by House Speaker John Boehner – Mr. Rubio put on his lizard suit and said he would probably vote against his own bill…

Many were baffled by the Senator’s action. I wasn’t. It was a classic Rubio move. It allowed him the chance to speak on both sides of the issue from thereon in.

Last night we heard President Obama’s speech announcing his plans for executive action on our broken immigration system. I have criticized the President quite often lately, but for his action last night I believe he deserves our praises and thanks. He finally stared down the republicans without so much as a blink. More importantly, he offered millions who toil in this country while under constant fear of being separated from loved ones a breath of fresh air – of hope and of peace.

Bravo and thank you, Mr. President!

Does anyone understand Mr. Rubio's response the President's action last night?

But back to Florida’s junior senator… Here’s Sen. Rubio’s response to the President’s announcement:

“We need immigration reform. But the right way to do it is to first bring illegal immigration under control by securing the borders and enforcing the laws, then modernizing our legal immigration system. After we do these things, we will eventually have to deal with those here illegally in a reasonable but responsible way. The President’s actions now make all of this harder and are unfair to people in our immigration system who are doing things the right way.”

Another case of he’s for it while being against it – and saying absolutely nothing in the end. Oh! and at the same time lying to the voters. He mentions, for example, controlling and securing the borders. Well, if he’d read the president’s plan (which he probably did but found it inconvenient to acknowledge) he would have noticed that enforcement and border security are paramount in last night’s announcement by the President. But it’s Marco being Marco.

Sen. Rubio speaks of “doing things the right way.” What is the right way, Mr. Rubio? Is separating a mother and her child the right way? Is deporting the person who has labored under the sun for more than a decade in this country to assure that you and your family get your greens, is that the right way? Is deporting women who have helped raise our children, while fearful of losing their own to ICE, the right way?

Mr. Rubio, your parents were immigrants. Have you forgotten where you came from?
