The end of a tough 2022 (+Español)
We are coming to the end of a tough year. As we deliver our inheritance to 2023, it is not one to celebrate with fireworks while real and deadly ones go off in Eastern Europe, and their humanitarian and economic consequences affect the entire planet. Furthermore, we are experiencing a polarization that is common to all societies that radicalize positions in almost all areas of life.
Our reality is one to worry about as we deliver it to the “new” year. People and societies do not easily forget what they have lived — the past simply drags on, coexists, integrates and will form part of that almost present that is already around the corner.
I wish that changing the year on the almanac would rectify the life and attitudes of each of my 11 million Cuban compatriots and that we would seriously review our lives — from within and out — and be able to change a bit. We deserve it, especially those others who have found themselves cornered by this adventure of living.
Becoming better is a good wish that should become a practice. Hopefully we will give it a serious try.
And now to sports
Cuban baseball players who play in the Major Leagues, or in others, will be able to participate with the Cuban team in the World Classic of this sport to be held in March next year.
Permission was granted by Washington. Now pending are the players selected by Cuba, and who agree to participate in the event, that receive the OK from the teams with which they play for.
Baseball has historically been the most followed sport in Cuba. Our country has produced great and famous baseball players. But in recent years the level of the national championships has decreased significantly, and with it the fan base that followed it live or on TV.
Different reasons are used to explain this. Some offer reasons. I summarize it by saying that when a country is in crisis, it is difficult for any sector to remain unscathed from such a situation.
While baseball fans declined, the fan base for soccer grew. The recently concluded World Cup in Qatar, broadcast in its entirety by Cuban TV, put thousands and thousands of compatriots in front of the televisions. Here at home many cheered for teams from Argentina, Brazil, Spain, England, France, and Germany. The match for the Cup between Argentina and France was a great game; some experts are calling it the best, or one of the best, in the history of the world championships. And the winner was a member of the Latin American community.
“Did you get to see it?” a friend from abroad asked me. I answered: “All of them, without missing one because, in addition to the live broadcasts, they were repeated at other times.” This allowed those who were working to see it later and those affected by blackouts at those times, to look for where there was electricity in their area.
So for today and the past year… a big hug.

Aquí Allá y Acullá
Llegando al final de un año crudo y duro
Estamos llegando al final de un año crudo y duro, lo mismo aquí, allá que acullá. La herencia a recibir por el 2023 no es para tirar fuegos artificiales cuando se disparan los reales y mortíferos Allá, en el Este europeo, y sus consecuencias humanitarias y económicas afectan a todo el planeta. Por demás, vivimos una polarización que va siendo común a todas las sociedades y se expresa en casi todos los ámbitos de la vida, radicalizando posiciones.
Muy preocupante la realidad que entregamos al “nuevo” año. Personas y sociedades no se desvisten fácilmente de lo vivido, el pasado simplemente se arrastra, convive, integra y formará parte de ese casi presente que ya está al doblar de la esquina.
Desearía que cambiar de almanaque valiera por rectificación de vida y de actitudes de cada uno de los 11 millones de compatriotas y que nos revisáramos seriamente por dentro y fuéramos capaces de cambiarnos un “tin” (un poquito). Nos lo merecemos y mucho más los otros, los arrinconados en esta aventura de vivir. Ser mejores, es un buen deseo que debería convertirse en práctica. Ojalá lo intentemos con seriedad.
Y ahora al deporte
Los peloteros cubanos que juegan en las Grandes Ligas de EE.UU; o en otras, podrán participar con el equipo cubano en el Clásico Mundial de este deporte a celebrarse en marzo del año que se nos viene ya.
El permiso fue otorgado por Washington. Ahora queda pendiente que los jugadores seleccionados por Cuba y que estén de acuerdo con participar en el evento, reciban el ok de los equipos con los que tienen franquicia.
El béisbol (la pelota), ha sido históricamente el deporte más seguido en Cuba y nuestro país ha dado grandes y famosos peloteros. Pero en los últimos años, el nivel de los campeonatos nacionales ha menguado sensiblemente, y con ello la fanaticada que lo seguía en vivo o mediante la TV.
Distintas razones se esgrimen para explicarlo. Unos dicen que por h otros que por b. Yo lo resumo expresando que cuando un país está en crisis difícilmente algún sector quede indemne de tal situación.
Mientras decaía la afición por el béisbol, crecía la fanaticada por el futbol. El recién concluido mundial en Catar, transmitido íntegramente por la TV Cubana, puso ante los televisores a miles y miles de compatriotas. En nuestro patio criollo, las simpatías estaban repartidas entre los equipos de Argentina, Brasil, España, Inglaterra, Francia, Alemania. El partido por la Copa entre Argentina y Francia fue un partidazo; para los expertos califica como el mejor o uno de los mejores en la historia de los mundiales. Y la Copa quedó en nuestro patio.
“¿Pudieron verlo?”, me preguntó un amigo residente en el extranjero. Respondí que todos, sin faltar uno porque, además de las transmisiones en vivo, los repetían en otro horario. Esta facilidad permitía que quienes estaban trabajando pudiesen verlo más tarde y aquellos golpeados en esos horarios por los apagones, buscaran donde hubiera electricidad en su territorio. Para más de talles les sugiero que vean el último programa de Pánfilo en Vivir del cuento titulado *De Qatar a La Habana (lunes 26) y tendrán un acercamiento a situaciones vividas.
