Rebooting the 2024 presidential election (+Español)

It’s late on November 5, 2024. A new president of the United States has been elected. All is calm. As of August 2023, voters believe it is going to be a rematch of 2020: Biden vs Trump II. 

Who will win? Biden. Trump. Neither?

A quick glimpse

Let us take a quick look at Donald Trump today. Four times indicted in 2023 and many GOPers (except for the hard core MAGA crowd) beginning to shun Trump’s cancerous personality. His actions have turned off voters. Then there’s the president, Joe Biden, who, I believe, might be looking for an elegant way to bow out of next year’s election. On that November day next year he will be 81, if reelected. The past four years have taken a toll on him physically. It’s a job that takes a toll on all who have passed through the White House’s front doors. 

Biden’s decision, although a sad one for any loving father, might be based on his son Hunter, who seems in serious trouble with the law and is helping to drag the president down. Biden might then opt to inform the country that he is not running for reelection to turn his energies to helping his one remaining son. 

I say this because as bad as things are right now in the US, an election featuring both front liners from 2020 would be disastrous for the country. If Biden-Trump does go off as expected, next year’s presidential election turns into a bad reality TV show with a former president and a sitting president battling it out — and the narrative of their campaigns will deal with what goes on in the courtrooms. This country, then, will find itself sinking deeper into that overused metaphorical swamp we hear so much about. A travesty for voters who need to hear more from our candidates on ideas of how to fix the real problems this country faces and less commercialization and the rom-com programing of a presidential election. 

Biden and Trump

There’s The Don — as in Donald Trump . It’s a perfect name for one who has acted like a Corleone in the White House.

And Biden surely has done some good — he did beat Trump, for example — but the country’s tired of hearing of Hunter Biden this and Hunter Biden that. It’s a matter that needs to be settled, for sure, but it should not be as part of an important presidential election. 

I know Trump sees the election as a way of squirming his way out of paying the price for his life of crime. If only the Republican Party would grow balls and kick him to the curve, along with his followers who continue to drink Trump’s Kool-Aid laced with lies and deception. Trump on his own will not step away. The Party has to push him out for the good of the Party… and the country.

As for Biden, he’s told us of his love for country, his patriotism and dedication to the republic and all it stands for. Well, then, Mr. President, it’s time to put up: Step away. You can claim to have saved the republic — you did beat Trump. Who knows where we’d be if Trump had won in 2020… We owe Biden for this. But the country needs new, fresh leadership, something Biden cannot offer at this time. So Mr. President… step away and allow others to lead.

Finally, many will tell me there are no others who can replace these two. Not true. Look around. There are other persons running this year. But this country is so stuck idling in neutral that unless you are a Democrat or Republican who can raise millions of dollars (creating the conflicts of interest we see today) you cannot run for political office.

What if?

Other than the two frontrunners the only other candidate with any traction has been Florida’s Ron DeSantis, although his fortunes have taken a nosedive in the past few months. 

There’s also Gavin Newsom, governor of California, who has from the start challenged the backward policies of both Trump and DeSantis. Newsom has not declared his intention to run for president, but he is one of the few high profile Democrats who has been willing to challenge the Republican’s hard turn to the right every step of the way.

Both Newsom and DeSantis are young and see the future of the country from different perspectives. They mirror, in some ways, the state of the US — a polarized society where one half tugs right while the other pulls left.

So wouldn’t it be interesting to see them battle it out as standard bearers of their respective parties? 

I understand. It’s a daydream. And I acknowledge I have Trump fatigue (and I think most of the rest of the country feels the same), and I fear Biden looks old, tired and by next year will be weighed down even more by his son’s problems.

So why not Newsom and DeSantis? It would be an interesting experiment to test in what direction this country truly wants to move.

Reiniciar las elecciones presidenciales del 2024

Es tarde el 5 de noviembre de 2024. Se ha elegido un nuevo presidente de los Estados Unidos. Todo está en calma. A partir de agosto de 2023, los votantes creen que será una revancha de 2020: Biden vs Trump II.

¿Quién ganará? Biden. Trump. ¿Ninguno de los dos?

Un vistazo

Echemos un vistazo rápido a Donald Trump hoy. Cuatro veces acusado en 2023 y muchos republicanos (a excepción de la multitud de MAGA) que comienzan a evitar la personalidad cancerosa de Trump. Sus acciones han alejado a los votantes. Luego está el presidente, Joe Biden, quien, creo, podría estar buscando una manera elegante de retirarse de las elecciones del próximo año. Ese día de noviembre del próximo año cumplirá 81 años, si es reelegido. Los últimos cuatro años le han pasado factura físicamente. Es un trabajo que afecta a todos los que han pasado por las puertas de la Casa Blanca.

La decisión de Biden, aunque triste para cualquier padre, podría estar basada en su hijo Hunter, quien parece tener serios problemas con la ley y está ayudando a debilitar al presidente. Biden podría entonces optar por informar al país que no se presenta a la reelección para dedicar sus energías a ayudar al único hijo que le queda.

Digo esto porque, a pesar de lo mal que están las cosas en este momento en los EE. UU., una elección con ambos contrincantes del 2020 sería desastrosa para el país. Si Biden-Trump sale como se esperaba, las elecciones presidenciales del próximo año se convierten en un mal reality show de televisión con un expresidente y un presidente en funciones luchando, y la narrativa de sus campañas tuviera que ver con lo que sucede en los tribunales. Este país, entonces, se hundirá más profundamente en ese pantano metafórico sobreutilizado del que tanto oímos hablar. Una parodia para los votantes que necesitan escuchar más de nuestros candidatos sobre ideas de cómo solucionar los problemas reales que enfrenta este país y menos comercialización y la programación de comedia romántica de una elección presidencial.

Biden y Trump

Ahí está El Don –Donald Trump. Es un nombre perfecto para alguien que ha actuado como un Corleone en la Casa Blanca.

Y Biden seguramente ha hecho mucho bueno, venció a Trump, por ejemplo, pero el país está cansado de escuchar sobre Hunter Biden esto y Hunter Biden aquello. Es un asunto que debe resolverse, sin duda, pero no debe ser como parte de una elección presidencial importante.

Sé que Trump ve la elección como una forma de evitar pagar el precio de su vida criminal. Ojalá al Partido Republicano le crecieran las pelotas y lo pateara hasta la curva, junto con sus seguidores que continúan bebiendo el Kool-Aid de Trump mezclado con mentiras y engaños. Trump por sí solo no se hará a un lado. El Partido lo tiene que sacar por el bien del Partido… y del país.

En cuanto a Biden, nos ha hablado de su amor por el país, su patriotismo y dedicación a la república y todo lo que representa. Bueno, entonces, señor presidente, es hora de ponerse: aléjese. Puedes afirmar que salvaste a la república: venciste a Trump. Quién sabe dónde estaríamos si Trump hubiera ganado en 2020… Se lo debemos a Biden. Pero el país necesita un liderazgo nuevo y fresco, algo que Biden no puede ofrecer en este momento. Entonces, señor presidente… dé un paso al costado y permita que otros lideren.

Finalmente, muchos me dirán que no hay otros que puedan reemplazar a estos dos. No es verdad. Mira alrededor. Hay otras personas corriendo este año. Pero este país está tan atascado en una posición neutral que, a menos que seas demócrata o republicano y puedas recaudar millones de dólares (creando los conflictos de intereses que vemos hoy), no puedes postularte para un cargo político.

¿Y si?…

Aparte de los dos principales candidatos, el único otro candidato con alguna tracción ha sido Ron DeSantis de Florida, aunque su fortuna ha caído en picada en los últimos meses.

También está Gavin Newsom, gobernador de California, quien desde el principio ha desafiado las políticas retrógradas tanto de Trump como de DeSantis. Newsom no ha declarado su intención de postularse para presidente, pero es uno de los pocos demócratas de alto perfil que ha estado dispuesto a desafiar el duro giro a la derecha de los republicanos en cada paso del camino.

Tanto Newsom como DeSantis son jóvenes y ven el futuro del país desde diferentes perspectivas. Reflejan, de alguna manera, el estado de los EE. UU.: una sociedad polarizada donde una mitad tira hacia la derecha mientras que la otra tira hacia la izquierda.

Entonces, ¿no sería interesante verlos luchar como abanderados de sus respectivos partidos?

Entiendo. Es un sueño. Y reconozco que tengo la fatiga de Trump (y creo que la mayoría del resto del país siente lo mismo), y temo que Biden se vea viejo, cansado y que el próximo año se sienta aún más agobiado por los problemas de su hijo.

Entonces, ¿por qué no Newsom y DeSantis? Sería un experimento interesante para finalmente probar en qué dirección quiere moverse realmente este país.
