Hondurans Stage General Strike against Coup

HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 29 (ACN) The Honduran people’s actions against the coup d’état perpetrated against their constitutional President Manuel Zelaya early on Sunday are on the rise with a call to a general strike this Monday.
Angel Alvarado, representative of the “Bloque Sindical Popular” (People´s Union Bloc) in Honduras told the press that since midnight some 20,000 Hondurans have gathered outside the presidential house protesting the coup staged against the head of state of the Central American nation, Granma newspaper Reported.
The president of the Committee for the Defense of Human Rights in Honduras (CODEH), Andres Pavon told EFE News Agency that the strike will be joined by workers of the public sector and members of the “Central General de Trabajadores” (General Labor Confederation), CGT as well as by other worker’s organizations.
All state agencies and institutions in Honduras have been seized by the military, while sworn-in de facto president Roberto Micheletti imposed a 48-hour curfew in the country.
The leader of Honduras’ Via Campesina International Movement Rafael Alegria said the Honduran people will stay on the streets in spite of the curfew.

The farmer leader stressed that the people’s mobilization will continue throughout the country until democracy is reestablished and normality returns to Honduras.
