Gays, Blacks, the David’s exposed penis, and dead children (+Español)
Three 9-year-old children (and three adults) were killed this week by a deranged shooter at a Christian elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee. And the country keeps shrugging it off in the belief that the safety of our kids is not considered as important as the Second Amendment of the US Constitution. Most politicians and too many gun owners consider limiting gun use, and who can purchase them, heresy. As for assault rifles, once only used for war, they are now found on the streets of our cities.
So let’s accept the fact that an occasional dead child is part of the cost of doing business in a country where cash is king, and then comes everything else, including our children in schools.
How dare we challenge the Second Amendment and stray from that foundational text written by our ‘enlightened’ founding fathers, they argue. So enlightened were they, in fact, that many (including George Washington and Thomas Jefferson) enslaved human beings they bought and sold as property. Add to that the fact that women could not vote; Native Americans were slaughtered, enslaved and had their lands stolen; and to vote you had to own property. If that’s enlightened then I’m a genius, and I’m sure I’m far from it…
As for American exceptionalism: maybe we’ve become exceptionally stupid.
And speaking of stupid… The Florida Republican Party, led by wanna-be president Ron DiSaster, has become the bell cow for ignorance veiled as morality. Not only is the Party trying to outlaw the LGBTQ+ community in the state, has outlawed teaching about the treatment of Blacks in this country, and banned books, among other things. But last week Florida became the laughingstock of the world when an art teacher was fired for showing pornography to his 6th grade class. The pornography? A photograph of Michelangelo’s David, a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture, deemed pornographic because of David’s exposed penis.
Makes you wonder, doesn’t it?
It’s hard to understand, I know. But I think there are areas that I can explain. Let us start with Blacks in the US. The Republican Party has become a racist party, whether they want to admit it or not. The banning of books, I suppose they’ve studied Hitler’s Nazi Party and taken tips from it. The hatred of gays? I think, too often, it is an issue that can be explained by a self-hatred that consumes many of these same Republicans who refuse to consult their therapists about. Lastly, the sculpture of David? Maybe they’re jealous and are taking it out on our children in schools.
But too few of us seem worried about what’s happening all across this country — often led by Florida. All I can say is that I’m glad I’m old. And yet, I worry about my daughter who will have to face the reality of a country that’s falling apart; no, it is being torn apart by scoundrels and idiots — too many who know better.
Which brings me to one last thought… I remember my days at the University of Florida when streaking became a thing. Groups of people would announce a streak for a certain time and date. They would then run completely naked (shoes were allowed; there was also the guy known as the Rabbit who wore a belt and carried an umbrella) through the streets of Gainesville as police and others looked on. Nobody got hurt. No one was shot. And at the end of the run everyone went back home and returned to their studies. Actually, better than drugs and booze, it was a very healthy activity.
Republicans seem to have forgotten how we were all born. Or are they different and came out of the womb with suits and ties on?
One last thought: Maybe we should start a new streaking craze. We can kick it off in front of the governor’s mansion in Tallahassee.

Hace que nos cuestionemos,¿no es así?
Es difícil de entender, lo sé. Pero creo que hay áreas que puedo explicar. Comencemos con los negros en los Estados Unidos. El Partido Republicano se ha convertido en un partido racista, lo quieran admitir o no. La prohibición de libros, supongo que han estudiado el Partido Nazi de Hitler y tomados consejos de él. ¿El odio a los homosexuales? Nadie resultó herido. Nadie recibió un disparo. Y al final de la carrera todos volvieron a sus casas y regresaron a sus estudios. En realidad, resultaba una actividad saludable, mejor que las drogas y el alcohol.
Los republicanos parecen haber olvidado cómo nacimos todos. ¿O son diferentes y salieron del útero con traje y corbata?
