Fire
in Camagüey
A
Service by the Radio Progreso Alternativa Havana Bureau
A
large fire broke out on Monday, April 7, at El Encanto store in the
city of Camagüey, in the Eastern region of the country.
Eighteen-year-old firefighter Alejandro Clivillés Sariol died
and 14 others were wounded.
The
provincial daily Adelante
reported that 500 members of the Ministry of the Interior, Army and
Civil Defense, together with the store’s workers and others from
nearby work centers" collaborated in putting out the fire.
According
to sources in the city, the fire broke out around 1:30 p.m. and was
finally put out at 7:00 p.m.
The
authorities are appraising the damage and investigating the probable
causes of the fire.
Competition
for efficiency?
With
the creation of municipal delegations of the Ministry of Agriculture,
farmers will not only be able to use more land, but will also have
the opportunity to sell to more new dealers.
A
report by the National Information Agency (AIN) corroborated what
other sources had previously leaked announcing that marketing of
produce will be done “according to the characteristics and needs of
the municipality."
Up
to now, the government stockpiling company had the monopoly for
buying and selling produce. The efficiency of this entity has been
strongly criticized and a great number of people blame it for the
losses due to delays.
Experts
believe that the presence of other dealers will favor all the
production and distribution.
Substituting
imports
During
a work visit to the Eastern province of Holguín, First Vice
President José R. Machado Ventura insisted on the need to
substitute imports.
According
to press reports, Machado Ventura paid a visit to the July 26 cane
cutting machine factory, where they are producing "all the
necessary spare parts for the cane cutting machines."
The
factory also makes spare parts, agricultural accessories, trailers
and weed cutters, which will save thousands of dollars for the
country.
Vice
President Machado also visited cooperative farms where he focused on
"intensive cattle ranching and the plans fattening steers."
Substitution
of imports and increasing of agricultural products to reach a greater
food security are priorities of the Cuban government.
Saving
through wind power
A
report by the daily Ahora,
in the
eastern province of Holguín, says that the wind generators
park for the city of Gibara has saved over 300 tons of fuel since it
was hooked up to the national power grid in late February.
At
Gibara, on the northern coast of Holguín, a feasibility study
was made initially, and subsequently the first park was built. Now
the second one, Gibara 2, has begun construction and will have a
generation capacity of 4.5 MW/hour.
According
to Ahora, Gibara 2 "will have six Chinese made Goldwind machines
mounted on towers 50 meters tall."
Experts
believe that the Island could generate, during the present decade,
approximately 300 MW using wind power.
Debate
on the Cuban Five
The
Internet site http://foro.jovenclub.cu
will open on Friday, April 10, a debate on the Cuban Five — U.S.
prisoners since 1988.
Fernando
González, Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón
Labañino and René González, known
internationally as the Cuban Five, infiltrated terrorist
organizations in Florida in order to prevent their actions against
Cuba.
Relatives
of these antiterrorists will be present and will answer questions.
The
case of the Cuban Five, which never proved that their mission
endangered U.S. national security in any form, has not been presented
in an objective way by mainstream media.
