Colombian government and ELN reach historic ceasefire agreement (+Español)
On June 9, the Colombian government and the leftist guerrilla group, the National Liberation Army (ELN), signed a historic agreement for a six-month bilateral ceasefire. The parties also reached an agreement on the participation of civil society in developing peace negotiations, as well as in verification and monitoring mechanisms.
The agreements on the long-awaited truce and the participation of society in the process were reached during the third round of peace talks, which began on May 2 and concluded on June 9 in Havana, Cuba.
President Gustavo Petro, who traveled to Cuba to attend the closing ceremony of the third round of talks, celebrated the agreement on the ceasefire.
The ceasefire will be applicable nationwide and will be implemented on August 3. Between June 9 and July 5, both the ELN and the government will prepare and discuss internally how the ceasefire will be implemented and how they will reach those in remote areas to spread the message about the new agreement. Both parties will give orders of cessation of offensive operations on July 6, and finally, on August 3, the ceasefire will be fully implemented.
During the six months of ceasefire, the Colombian Armed Forces and the ELN guerrillas will stop all kinds of offensive operations against each other. Additionally, the rebel group will halt any hostilities against the civilian population.
With regard to the participation of civil society, a National Participation Committee will be created that will begin functioning on July 25. It will include representatives from 30 sectors of society, who will contribute to the transformation of the country and the achievement of peace.

Gobierno de Colombia y el ELN alcanzan histórico acuerdo de alto el fuego
El 9 de junio, el gobierno colombiano y el grupo guerrillero izquierdista Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN) firmaron un acuerdo histórico para un cese al fuego bilateral de seis meses. Las partes también llegaron a un acuerdo sobre la participación de la sociedad civil en el desarrollo de las negociaciones de paz, así como en los mecanismos de verificación y seguimiento.
Los acuerdos sobre la ansiada tregua y la participación de la sociedad en el proceso se alcanzaron durante la tercera ronda de conversaciones de paz, que comenzó el 2 de mayo y concluyó el 9 de junio en La Habana, Cuba.
El presidente Gustavo Petro, quien viajó a Cuba para asistir al acto de clausura de la tercera ronda de conversaciones, celebró el acuerdo sobre el cese al fuego.
El cese al fuego será aplicado a nivel nacional y se implementará el 3 de agosto. Entre el 9 de junio y el 5 de julio, tanto el ELN como el gobierno prepararán y discutirán internamente cómo se implementará el cese al fuego y cómo llegará a las zonas remotas para difundir el mensaje sobre el nuevo acuerdo. Ambas partes darán órdenes de cese de las operaciones ofensivas el 6 de julio y, finalmente, el 3 de agosto se implementará en su totalidad el alto el fuego.
Durante los seis meses de cese al fuego, las Fuerzas Armadas de Colombia y la guerrilla del ELN frenarán todo tipo de operaciones ofensivas entre sí. Además, el grupo rebelde detendrá cualquier hostilidad contra la población civil.
En cuanto a la participación de la sociedad civil, se creará un Comité Nacional de Participación que comenzará a funcionar el 25 de julio y contará con representantes de 30 sectores de la sociedad, quienes contribuirán a la transformación del país y el logro de la paz.
