Castro
still writes after dying

A
service of Radio Progreso Alternativa’s Havana Bureau

On
Sunday, August 26, the
Juventud
Rebelde

daily published an article by Fidel Castro on the centennial of
Eduardo Chibás, a charismatic political leader and founding
chairman of the Party of the Cuban People (Orthodox Party), the same
party which Castro was a member of and from which he recruited most
of the assailants of Santiago de Cuba’s Moncada Barracks in 1953.

Previously,
on August 24, Miami press media had created great expectations when
they printed the rumor that Fidel Castro had died. Other media
mentioned that Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez had traveled
to Havana to honor the deceased Cuban leader. Chávez
vehemently denied the version of Castro’s demise.

For
his part, Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Pérez Roque assured
the French AFP news agency from Brazil that Castro was recovering
well and that he was up to date in the most important issues. He even
said that he had received “guidelines from him for this meeting.”

Pérez
Roque attended a meeting of Latin American and Asian countries that
ended August 23 in Brasilia.

Meanwhile,
and as culmination to his alleged decease, Castro published an
article related to Eduardo Chibás and on Tuesday
,
August 28, published another one, under the title “The Submission
to the Imperial Policy, which can be read in Spanish at

Elevator
nuisance

In
its Sunday, August 26 edition,
Juventud
Rebelde

printed an article on the situation of elevators in many apartment
buildings.

According
to the newspaper, most of the 562 elevators which are active in the
capital’s buildings have some type of problem. The article blames
it on the equipments’ advanced age, which is the cause of constant
breakdowns and malfunctions.

For
those who live in high rise buildings, the situation is almost a
tragedy, even more so for the elderly, who, according to the
newspaper, could suffer the Diseased Building Syndrome.

Will
Cuba buy U.S. wheat?

Among
foreign correspondents in Havana, there is the rumor that Cuba will
buy as much as 100,000 tons of wheat from U.S. exporters.

Although
the Cuban government’s importing food agency ALIMPORT has not
denied the rumor, the same correspondents speculate that the silence
confirms that. at least. there are negotiations taking place.

Recently
the independent organization International Trade Commission (ITC)
claimed that if restrictions to trade were lifted, the U.S. could
cover as much as 70% of Cuban imports.

Renewable
energy in the Sierra Maestra

In
its Thursday August 23 edition, Granma reported of the increasing use
of renewable energy in the mountain areas of eastern Cuba.

At
different municipalities of the famous Sierra Maestra Mountain Range,
there are 17 mini hydroelectric power plants that generate 800
kilowatts, and service 17,500 people who live in areas not reached by
the National Electro-energetic System.

Mountain
areas also have photovoltaic energy which uses solar panels that
power schools and social centers.
