Palestine, Donald, a Florida DiSaster, and a slew of crooks in Miami (+Español)
The October 7 Hamas terrorist attack on Israel was shocking and indefensible. The Israeli government’s treatment of the Palestinians is also indefensible. The Israeli’s response to the Hamas attack reminds me of the Bush administration’s response to 9/11, where the US attacked the Iraqis for no good reason — other than the weapons of mass destruction fairy tale, their hatred of Saddam Hussein, and their love of Middle Eastern petroleum. In the process, thousands of innocent Iraqis, many of whom were children, were slaughtered so that then Vice President Dick Cheney and Halliburton, the company he headed before becoming VP, could enrich themselves even more. In the process, they helped destabilized the Middle East, and we’re now paying the price for the Bush-Cheney extravaganza.
As for Hamas, let the Israelis hunt down each and every one of them and do as they please… unacceptable, though, is the attack of Gaza by Israel, where thousands of innocent Palestinians, including a shocking number of children, have been slaughtered by Israeli forces. And Gaza, at least in photographs and film, has been reduced to rubble and a wasteland.
So in 2024, Benjamin “Bibi” Netanyahu must go. And the US must stop stocking Israel with arms and munitions that are being used for the ongoing slaughter of Palestinians.
It is time to begin negotiating a peaceful two-state solution. As for the US, we must seek peace, not more death and destruction.
Donald (no, not the duck)
He is like a recurring nightmare… Donald Trump is still in the news. I’m tired of him. I can’t believe his enablers are not sick of him, too. Since 2016, all we’ve heard is Trump this, Trump that. He reminds me of Sisyphus, but instead of pushing the boulder up a mountain, he instead pushes it (we are the rock) downwards into an abyss we might find difficult to come back from.
It is why I pray that 2024 becomes the year when we learn that this man, who knocked over the hornets nest that has become the United States, activating the way-too-many crazies to swarm, is finally sent to where he belongs — a prison cell with no exit key, or his final resting place as a result of straining too hard on his porcelain throne after a night of overindulging on greasy MacDonald’s burgers and fries.
Whatever form it takes, may he be gone. Finally!
And in Florida…
The good news is that Governor Ron DeSantis cannot run for governor again. (I’ll take the good news in whatever form I can get it these days.) After he’s through, the guy qualifies for a job as grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan.
DeSantis, or should I call him Florida’s DiSaster, has taken this state on a path that is truly disastrous. Black history has been erased —at least the part that might “bother” some white folks who believe that slavery was beneficial for the enslaved. Taking a page from Trump, DeSantis views education as elitist… and that’s coming from a man who attended Yale and Harvard.
Governor DeSantis has spent millions of our taxpayer dollars cruelly sending immigrants without their knowledge or consent to states that he considers sanctuary cities run by Democrats. He has made the lives of many members of our LGBTQ+ communities a living hell. And that’s just for starters…
The good news? He is still running for president, but unless something strange happens in the Iowa caucuses in January, that strong wind in his sails he had earlier this year has been practically extinguished. Proving that DeSantis’ 15 minutes of fame may soon be over.
And I say: Thank you, God.
Traveling down I-75
We’ve reached Miami. I love this city, but boy do I sometimes hate it.
It’s not the city I dislike, really. Miami is beautiful, and in the winter I would not trade it for anywhere else. It’s the people who run this place, the politicians and the other so-called leaders.
Miami pols, like their counterparts in the nation’s capital, view their elected offices as a way to get rich. Also, once elected they forget who got them there and their aim becomes one of simply staying in power to continue feeding on the gravy train that government provides them.
Take, for example, Miami Mayor Francis Suarez — smart, handsome, and only interested in getting wealthy. Ethically challenged, Francis has turned his job as leader of the state’s most important city into a springboard of networking opportunities to advance his interests. In truth, he ignores the people and the city he supposedly leads. He turns up at city hall, rarely, and that’s to pick up his $130,000 yearly salary — which he feels is not enough for his part-time job. He spends his time jet-setting around the world with wealthy ‘friends’ who pay for his lifestyle in exchange for a ‘friend’ at city hall. They expect their grandiosity to be repaid with questionable, if not illegal, advantages when doing business with and in the city.
And as if Suarez was not enough… there’s Commissioner Joe Carollo. A fixture of dysfunction in the city and around the county for the past 40 years, this man creates chaos wherever he goes. He is hateful, cruel and corrupt, and also a bully. His bullying of men and their businesses on Calle 8 in Miami, who favored his opponent in a recent election, turned into a lawsuit he lost earlier this year. It cost the city taxpayers millions of dollars to defend him. He lost and must now pay more than $60 million dollars. He is asking the city to pay for it. In Spanish we call him a “descarado” — or shameless.
I can go on and on and on. There’s the case of Commissioner Alex Diaz de la Portilla, who thankfully lost his seat in November, after being removed by Governor DiSaster for corruption charges he will soon have to face in a court of law. And yes, there are so many more. But I won’t bore you.
But I will continue to blame us, the voters, who keep voting for these creeps. It is time we got smart and got rid of them all. All of them… let’s start anew and see if we can do better. We can’t get any worse.
