Open letter to Lincoln Diaz-Balart
Dear
Congressman Diaz-Balart:
In
reply to your message announcing the launching of your campaign
website, please be advised that I shall not be voting for you in the
coming election. Instead, I will cast my vote for your adversary Mr.
Martinez. Listed below are three reasons, among others, that prompted
my decision.
First,
when I was 18-years-old, I joined the Brigade 2506 and fought at the
Bay of Pigs to destroy a communist government whose measures had
forced me to separate from my family in Cuba. Regrettably, since you
took office as my representative in Congress you have played an
essential role in the enactment and enforcement of similarly cruel
anti-family measures by the Bush administration. Your support for the
imposition of those cruel measures is as despicable as the Cuban
government support for their measures.
Second,
President Bush’s malfeasance has led our country astray and
weakened our war effort against extremists around the world. Case in
point is the shameful outing of CIA agent Valerie Plame by Dick
Cheney, Scooter Libby and Karl Rove. Her outing intended to protect
the foundation of lies upon which our country was taken to war and in
fact meets the legal and classical definitions of treason. You, Sir,
did not challenge the President to make good on his promise to fire
anyone in his administration who may have been involved in that
crime. José
Marti said: “Ver un crimen en calma es cometerlo”. You,
Sir, knew that a crime had been committed against our country and Ms.
Plame, yet remained impassive.
Third,
you voted with the President against expanding the federal medical
coverage for children. My daughter suffered from Leukemia when she
was little and she was cured because we had the appropriate medical
coverage to cover her illness. I pause to wonder how many sick
children could have been saved or treated but for your decision to
follow the party line as directed by a President who wears
Christianity on his sleeve and is said to follow notions directly
dictated by God, while acting in an uncharitable way and showing
utter disregard for the needs of the poor and disenfranchised. Your
position on this issue denotes a callousness of heart on your part
that does not deserve the votes of parents in our district or anyone
who believes himself or herself a Christian.
I
am voting for Mr. Martinez and sending a contribution to his
campaign. I’ll be glad to see you leave the Office that you so
wrongly have held, showing an uncritical subservience to the
ideological pull of your party instead of compassion, reason and true
patriotism.
Sincerely,
Mario
L. Cabello, Esq.

of Pigs Veteran
