(7-12-14) - Illusions of a World Cup at home hoping to win to give to a place with many social problems some joy vanished in the last two games that Brazil played. Today the Netherlands team cooked the home club – with a bit of orange. A penalty just two minutes into the game allowed us to see how this game for third place was going to end. A goal that was dismantled by the Germans trembled with three goals scored by Holland. The Brazilian futbol - known by our grandparents as ‘the beautiful game’ – will now have two ghosts: the maracanazo of 1950 and the thrashings of 2014. The most important recognition Brazil received from this tournament were the 14 goals scored against the team – the most ever conceded by this country in its history. 14 in 14 against Brazil By Graphite n Ink Last updated Jul 12, 2014 Share FacebookTwitterEmailGoogle+ReddItWhatsAppPinterest (7-12-14) – Illusions of a World Cup at home were vanished in the last two games that Brazil played. Today the Netherlands team cooked the home club – with a bit of orange. A penalty just two minutes into the game allowed us to see how this game for third place would develop. Recently dismantled by the Germans, the home team’s goal again trembled with three goals scored by Holland. The Brazilian futbol – known by our grandparents as ‘the beautiful game’ – will now have two ghosts: the maracanazo of 1950 and the thrashings of 2014. The most important recognition Brazil received from this tournament were the 14 goals scored against the team – the most ever conceded by this country in its history. (7-9-14) – Argentina celebrated its independence day swatting away goals and leaving Netherland behind. In a very tight match without goals, Sergio Romero, the Argentine goalie, made two incredible stops and carried his team to the final match against Germany. It had been 24 years since an Argentine team had reached the finals. (7-8-14) – Germany demolished Brazil 7 -1. There was little favorable to say about the Brazilian team missing its two best players and who ran up against a German machine with all cylinders at full speed ahead. The German team seems hard to beat. (7/7/14) – Four are left. Brazil is now without Neymar and a suspended Thiago Silva. The depleted Brazilians face Germany today with all gears running. In the other game scheduled for tomorrow we have Argentina’s Lionel Messi at the top of his game, but the South American team will be without the services of DiMaria. The Netherlands, with its constant pressure and shots at the goal, looks like favorites to take out the Argentineans. Who will come out victors? A classic European vs. Latin America matchup. (7/06/14) – Sunday was a day of rest from the TV screen, but not from ongoing commentary. On Saturday Costa Rica, a team which had yet to lose a match, lost and was eliminated by penalties. The Netherlands goes on to the semis and has become identified with Robben’s ‘dives’ or should we call them shots at the goal. (7-5-14) – Argentina advances to its first semifinal at the World Cup since 1990. It will face a Netherlands team that beat Costa Rica next. (7-4-14) – Brazil beat Colombia on the 4th of July but not before losing its striker and MVP, Neymar, with a knee to the back by Colombia’s Juan Zuniga. Some are calling the shot dirty. It’s not for us to decide. (7/3/14) – No matches to discuss today, but there was still much to talk about at the World Cup. FIFA seems to be taking a step back when it comes to the sanctions imposed on Uruguay’s best player, Luis Suarez, he of the buck teeth used for biting. Messi, Neymar, James and even Germany’s Muller because the Suarez name still resonates in the media in spite of not playing… (7-2-14) Two days without soccer. Get ready to this Friday… (7-1-14) Argentina beat Switzerland in the final minute of extra time. And thinking we were headed to the penalty round, the magic of Messi was made on the field … But the most spectacular player this afternoon was Tim Howard, the U.S. goalkeeper, who knocked off 16 potential goals by the Belgian team. Some suspect that Captain America was disguised as a keeper… (6-30-14) German and French teams won when all seemed in favor of Nigeria and Algeria. Goalkeepers heroes of the game. (6-29-14) Minutes from the final whistle, Mexico missed out on what appeared to be a sure victory. Ochoa allowed two balls to end up in the goal. Robben admitted he faked the fault, diving on the ground. If that is the case, should he not be punished the same as FIFA did with Uruguay’s Suarez. (6-28-14) – The second round has begun and we already have surprises and a major scare for the home team. Chile and Uruguay are on their way home. And Colombia looks promising. (6-27-14) Kicking, pushing, judges blind to penalties or inventing some. Good and bad soccer… (6-26-14) Time to rest and turn off the TV for a while. We already have 16 teams for the knockout stages. Big surprise, nearly half of the qualified teams are Latino. (6-25-14) We are about to finish the first stage. If Argentina finds a team like Germany the organization will have to change the net in the goal every 10 minutes. (6-24-14) Colombia sweeps Japan and Tabarez, couch of Uruguayan National Team leaves out another European team. (6-23-14) It was a busy day of soccer. Goals and more goals were scored. Brazil scored 4, Mexico 3, Netherlands 2, and even Spain hit on three … but a bit late!!! They had one leg on the plain ride back home after being eliminated. (6-22-14) – Portuguese mega star Ronaldo saved his team from going over the cliff with a perfect last second pass to Varela that tied the match vs. U.S. Final score: 2-2. (6-21-14) – Saturday was a day of surprises, nothing new to the 2014 World Cup. All expected Argentina and Germany to romp over lesser opponents. But the goals never seemed to come – not in the quantities expected. Some refer to Argentina’s Messi as “god” and in his overtime kick to save the victory for Argentina we now know why. (6-20-14) – 2014 looks like the year for Latin America at the World Cup. Another European powerhouse, this time Italy, went down to defeat at the hands of Costa Rica with a score of 1-0. As the final whistle blew, Tico defender Junior Diaz threw himself to the Arena turf and cried with emotion. (6-19-14) – Uruguay is celebrating tonight. A great game and victory, beating England 2 – 1. Star of the match, Luis Suarez, who had missed Uruguay’s opening game due to injury, made a spectacular return with two goals. . (6-18-14) – Defending Cup champion Spain lost to Chile 2-0 meaning they probably have no hope of progressing from Group B. Oh how the mighty have fallen in 2014! Then again, Spain fared better this match compared to their 5-1 drubbing by Holland. The good news is the Spaniards will have more time to watch the coronation of the new king. (6-17-14) – Goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa made a series of outstanding saves to help Mexico hold Brazil to a thrilling 0-0 draw at the World Cup on Tuesday. Both teams now have 4 points in Group A with Brazil ahead by one more goal scored. A win by either team would have guaranteed a spot in the next round. (6-16-14) – Portugal took a 4-0 pounding from Germany on Monday during their first match of the World Cup. The Twitter and social media circuit blamed Portuguese superstar Ronaldo for the loss. There was more than one disgruntled Portuguese fan who lashed out by speculating that Ronaldo never hit the field of play –he was too busy primping before the match and forgot to play, they claimed… (6-15-14) – Lionel Messi scored a goal that is destined to go down in World Cup folklore as Argentina triumphed over tournament newcomers Bosnia-Herzegovina, 2-1. Messi, known as The Flea, seemed to have the ball tied to his shoe… (6-14-14) – Uruguay has a reputation for rough play, sometimes beyond the rules… or that’s what we’ve been told. It didn’t help on Saturday. Costa Rica beat them 3-1. (6-13-14) – Friday the 13th was just that for favored Spain in a 5-1 loss to the Netherlands squad. (6-12-14) – The World Cup kicked off with a wrong goal kick by Brazil, who still won 3-1 against Croatia Share FacebookTwitterEmailGoogle+ReddItWhatsAppPinterest
