Trump the big winner in Florida Tuesday night

It was a night of many expectations, especially in Florida where we saw the potential of a progressive young candidate becoming governor of the third largest state in the country. It was not to be.

The big winner in Florida may end up being President Donald Trump. By way of twitter, the president had picked Ron DeSantis as his choice for governor. In a very tight race, DeSantis managed to defeat Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum by what appears to be less than one percentage point. In the battle for the U.S. Senate seat, outgoing governor Rick Scott also managed to squeeze past incumbent Sen. Bill Nelson making it a clean sweep for the president in the two most important positions in play during Tuesday’s Florida election.

If there is a silver lining in the midterm elections is the fact that it appears that Democrats have wrested control of the House of Representatives from Republicans. This signifies that Congress will no longer be in complete control of one party — a dangerous situation going forward for the president, who for the first time during his presidency may face resistance from an opposing party that does not agree with his every move. It also signals the possibility of a president who may face investigations and even the possibility of impeachment based on the Mueller report — if it is ever issued.

Locally, here in Miami, Republican Rep. Carlos Curbelo lost his seat in the House in a tight race to newcomer Debbie Murcasel-Powell. Donna Shalala beat TV personality Maria Elvira Salazar, taking over the seat once held by Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. Mario Diaz-Balart soundly defeated his opponent Mary Barzee Flores in his race.
