Michael Moore: Disarm all cops, release African-Americans from prison
Early Thursday, wealthy filmmaker Michael Moore issued two demands on Twitter. First, he demanded that African-Americans current incarcerated for drug or non-violent offenses be immediately released from jail. Second, he demanded that all police officers in the country be disarmed.
“Here’s my demand,” he tweeted. “I want every African-American currently incarcerated for drug ‘crimes’ or nonviolent offenses released from prison today.”
“Next demand,” he said in a separate tweet. “Disarm the police. We have a 1/4 billion 2nd amendment guns in our homes 4 protection. We’ll survive til the right cops r hired.”
Moore, however, wasn’t finished. “Local cops now militarized,” he said in a third tweet. “Founding Fathers said NO army policing on our soil. Why do cops have tanks? Oh, right – the Enemy: The Black Man.”
Several asked Moore why he singled out African-Americans, instead of everyone. “Don’t all races deserve the same treatment?” one person asked.
Moore’s idea, while derided by many, managed to draw some support. One person, for example, suggested a “prisoner exchange” with Republicans, starting with former President George W. Bush and former Vice President Dick Cheney.
A number of others took Moore to task for suggesting the police be disarmed. Several called Moore out for his hypocritical stand on gun control.
“Wait!” one person tweeted. “You’ve been screaming for years we shouldn’t have guns because the police do!”
“No, let’s disarm your body guards you busy body hypocrite,” another person added. Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke, the sheriff who once warned of a second American revolution if gun confiscation measures were passed into law, responded with a suggestion of his own, Twitchy said.
“Start pilot project by doing it in his neighborhood,” Clarke tweeted. “Set up transitional inmate housing where he lives.”
As we reported in 2011, Moore, who is worth an estimated $50 million, owns a luxury vacation mansion on Torch Lake, Michigan. At the time, Andrew Breitbart said the home is located in “one of the most elite communities in the United States.”
The Washington Times said Moore’s comments comes “amid violent unrest” in Baltimore after Freddie Gray died while in police custody. According to reports, Gray may have intentionally tried to injure himself while in the back of a police van. An unidentified prisoner said he heard Gray “banging himself against the walls” and believed he “was intentionally trying to injure himself.”
