SARASOTA – At a stage in the campaign when many statewide candidates would be trying to moderate their message to appeal to general election voters, Senate candidate Marco Rubio continues to emphasize a platform that appeals to conservative Republicans and the Tea Party movement.

Over the past seven days, Rubio has publicly backed Arizona’s controversial new immigration law, sent out press releases in opposition to repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in the military, and re-asserted previous calls to reform the nation’s big entitlement programs like Medicare and Social Security that he says will bankrupt the country if not changed.

Rubio, who campaigned Tuesday in Venice and Sarasota, said he does not need to move to the political middle because he is already there. The conservative tone of his campaign reflects a new political mainstream fed up with government spending and taxes.

“The people who are out of the mainstream are my opponents,” Rubio said.
