Florida voters’ action alert!

This is an action alert. It’s important, especially if you live in Florida.

This week, the League, along with a coalition of voter-protection groups, called for the establishment of a bipartisan task force to develop a blueprint for successful election reform. As part of this effort they sent a formal request to Governor Rick Scott (see letter below).

Now we are asking you to add your voice to the call for immediate action!      

Call and/or e-mail Governor Scott, 850-717-9337, Rick.Scott@EOG.MyFlorida.com, and let him know that Florida citizens want election reform today!  

If you choose, you can use one of the message templates below, customizing as needed.

• As a <citizen of/or other identifier>who is deeply concerned about the conduct of the 2012 general election, I am asking you to convene an independent, bipartisan commission to investigate the reasons for Florida’s election problems and come up with a structure for reform.
• I am a <concerned citizen/or other identifier> who personally <experienced/witnessed> excessive delays and inconvenience during the 2012 general election. <Add your own example, if you like.>The citizens of Florida deserve better, and I am asking you to convene an independent, bipartisan commission to investigate the reasons for these election problems and develop the groundwork for reform.

Dear Governor Scott:

In response to the multitude of problems experienced during Florida’s 2012 general election, the League of Women Voters of Florida is formally requesting that you convene a bipartisan task force to develop a blueprint for successful election reform.

Specifically, we ask that the group be chaired by trusted bipartisan leaders and that appointees represent a cross-section of knowledgeable stakeholders, including citizens and representatives of the business community, with some expertise in elections, supported by adequate budget and staff. We ask that this task force begin its work quickly and deliver its final recommendations to the 2013 Legislature at least two weeks before the 2013 session begins, allowing time for bills to be filed.

Appointment of this task force would build on the success and progress of the 2000 task force appointed by Governor Jeb Bush, which effectively facilitated the conduct of elections. Identifying and taking steps to remedy Florida’s election process will help our state regain its national reputation and increase our competitiveness for forward-thinking businesses.

We encourage you to support freedom and help the voters of Florida by convening this election reform task force.
