Empowering hyper-local progressives
Billy Wimsatt, founder of the League of Young Voters and Co-founder of Generational Alliance, has shared this “handy new tool, TheBallot.org, which has aggregated more than 350 local progressive and non-partisan voter guides…It’s a 21st Century model of how we can build an empowered hyper-local progressive political movement from the ground up. AND it’s about helping win and swing as many elections as possible on Tuesday — at all levels.’
Billy is of my generation of progressive organizers. Billy and I crossed organizers’ paths back 2003, when I was based in NYC and organizing nationally in the 2004 Elections and specifically working for Congressman Kucinich, who at the time was a progressive presidential candidate on the Democratic ticket. I brought Kucinich to the Harlem office of the League of Young Voters to meet and talk one-on-one with a round table of young folks from the League. I spent the day with the Congressman a couple months ago and he has never forgotten that evening of exchange and what he learned from us.
I say that the Tea Party has nothing on us, Progressives’ capacity to build, organize, and maintain commUnity, share factual information, use innovative technical capabilities (like Facebook and Twitter), and to fight for justice and freedom by “any means possible and available” and “voting is one of the ways we make a contribution because that is what we do.”
Check out this powerful message by DJ Chela. She speaks truth and is calling on this generation of voters, who will lead the progressive victory.
