Cuba: New therapy could revolutionize the fight against cancer
Cuban doctors in Havana [last week] presented the result of 14 years’ research, a solution of anti-tumor peptides whose natural analog is capable of offering positive dynamics in the treatment of cancer.
According to the Cuban specialists, what makes this peptide solution unique is that it can work on those areas of the human body that cannot be operated on or treated with chemotherapy or other modern therapies.
A clear example of the success of the new method is the child Leo, who suffers brain cancer. Today, the boy seems like an ordinary youth and it is difficult to realize at first sight that only a few months ago he won a battle with death.
The place where the tumor lay did not permit an operation, because Leo could run a high risk of losing his life. The only possible remedy for the boy was the pharmaceutical developed by the Cuban researchers of the business group Labiofam, based on natural peptides.
Although the medication is still in an experimental phase, it has given proof of curative effects.
The specialist in clinical trials at Labiofam, Niudis Cruz Zamora, submitted to Russia Today proof of the efficacy of the new product, showing the positive dynamics in the treatment of Leo.
“The patient presented with a huge lesion that measured 32 mm. in height, and major hydrocephaly. During the seven months he was in bed, he was treated only with the solution of natural peptides. The height decreased from 32.4 mm. to 27.1 mm. and, by May 2013, reached its minimum size,” the scientist said.
Among the patients treated with the solution are persons with advanced-stage disease who have no oncological alternative.
“I was in bad shape, like a vegetable. I couldn’t do anything, couldn’t walk, talk, spoke gibberish. To me, this was a great step forward,” says Yarislenis Abreu Castaneda, who has regained a normal life thanks to Labiofam’s innovation.
The specialists say that, thanks to its impressive effect, which improves the patients’ quality of life, the solution was the basis for a medicine that could become a definitive weapon against cancer.
According to company representatives, the product could revolutionize the market because it is not a question of false expectations but of solid tests done on animals. The tests demonstrated that a 90-percent reduction in the tumor can be achieved and, in some cases, their total disappearance.
“On the international data base, there is no active principle with similar effects,” said Labiofam’s scientific researcher Alexis Díaz García. “We foresee that it will become a formula that can resolve the cases of cancer that have no solution. We’re talking about cancer of the breast, colon, and prostate, which top the list of mortality,” he added.
The company’s plans go beyond curing, however. The director of the entrepreneurial group, José Antonio Fraga, has said that “this product will be effective both in the treatment of patients and the prevention of the disease.”
The administrators of the Cuban Research Center are sure that the production of the innovative pharmaceutical will mean a transcendental step in the near future to combat this disease that yearly takes millions of lives.
