Aretha Franklin died this morning (Aug. 16), but she will be with us forever. The Queen of Soul was “Prayer, love, desire, joy, despair, rapture, feminism, Black Power…’ said David Remnick, editor of The New Yorker. Her voice, he writes, “was a pure, painful, and unforgettable expression of American history and American feeling, the collective experience of black Americans and her own life.”
