The sounds and silence of music (+Español)

Music is about sounds and silences, I think, I’m not a musician. But on November 22, many residents of Havana woke up with that part of the music that is quiet, sad. We found out that Pablo had died the previous night. He was one of those people whose last name need not be said, everyone knew it.

Pablo Milanés, at 79, stopped living, and singing. And we Cubans are not only heartbroken for his leaving us, it is that with and through him several unforgettable moments of our own life are now gone. He helped us love, laugh, and cry. He helped express our years as an adolescent flower and that of a ripe autumn. We should all be grateful that he has lived, and that he has helped us to live.

Walking, running and kicking

Every day after my morning coffee I read what is published in the media, and what is going on in the diverse universe of the social networks, because conventional ones no longer control the information, nor do the disinformation tricks. And in my journey I appreciate that the World Cup monopolizes spaces and scores goals.

That which walks and kicks keeps the attention of billions of viewers through our televisions, others follow it through the social networks, and so on. Passion for the maximum event that is held in Qatar, that country on the Persian Gulf that is as rich as Uncle Scrooge, and replete with oil and gas and with a very closed political system. There, employers of 95% of the workforce withdraw passports of their workers, generally migrants, which prevents them from changing companies or jobs — a practice called kafala. There are no unions; homosexuality is persecuted, and offenders can spend 7 years in prison for it; women remain under male control and require permission to attend schools and universities, or to travel. But, after some arrangements with FIFA, which many describe as cosmetic, Qatar now celebrates the World Cup.

I understand that people want to escape for a while from the war in Eastern Europe, from its economic and financial consequences (price of gas, food, inflation). They see a kicked ball, and channel the violence rested in societies and countries.

In Cuba, the fans oscillate between teams representing Spain, England, Brazil, Germany, the Netherlands, France and Argentina. My favorite? Since my hometown does not have a team on the field, as long as a Latin American country wins, I win. I’m watching them on Cuba’s Telerebelde channel… of course, when there is electricity.

Much needed power

And energy — electricity — is at the heart of Díaz-Canel’s presidential tour. The energy crisis has not passed, the blackouts continue. When maintenance programs are not met in overexploited thermoelectric plants…

But weeks ago, the government rented another floating thermoelectric plant from a Turkish company (the seventh since there are already six operating), for which we do not know how much it will cost and other details. The fact is that Turkey is on the presidential schedule on this trip.

“What worries you about the ‘thermo floaters?’” a friend recently asked me. I understand that they are generally designed to cover contingencies, that is, they play the role of “emerging players, not regulars” and here it is not uncommon for emerging players to play the full game. I hope not, but it worries me.

During his stay in Algeria, President Amadjid Tebboune announced to his Cuban counterpart the cancellation of the payment for debt services and the postponement of their reimbursement for another time. He also offered a plant with solar panels and fuel for thermoelectric plants and other necessities. In other words: oil. I suppose those announced agreements had been brewing months ago, during the visit of Vice President Ricardo Cabrisas.

As I write these notes, the Cuban delegation is in Moscow, Russia, a country with which the contracted debt has been negotiated and renegotiated. Today, Tuesday the 22nd, the meeting between Díaz-Canel and President Putin is expected. The clear objective: oil, investments, food and the debt… Díaz-Canel has met with political and religious leaders, spoke in the Russian Duma, but nothing has been published, although everything indicates that there are agreement still in force until 2030.

Next week we will have to comment on news of this visit that will culminate in China.

De Aquí de Allá y Acullá

¿De qué está hecha la música? 

De sonidos y de silencios, pienso yo, que no soy músico. Pues el 22 de noviembre, día de la Música por ser Santa Cecilia, muchos habaneros amanecíamos con esa parte de la música que es la callada, porque supimos que en la noche había muerto Pablo. De esas personas cuyo apellido no se necesita decir, todos lo saben. Pablo Milanés, a sus 79 años, dejó de vivir, o sea de cantar. Y no lo sentimos los cubanos sólo porque se haya ido él, es que con él se van varios momentos inolvidables de la propia vida. Con él se amó, se rió, se lloró. El expresó nuestros años de flor adolescente y de otoño maduro.  Toca ahora agradecer que haya vivido, que nos haya hecho vivir.

ESO QUE ANDA Y PATEA

Todos los días después del cafecito, cuando tengo, leo lo que publican los medios nacionales, algunos internacionales y a lo que anda por el variopinto universo de las redes, porque ya los convencionales no controlan la información, tampoco las mañas desinformativas. En mi recorrido aprecio que el Mundial de futbol acapara espacios, anota goles. 

Eso que anda y patea mantiene la atención de miles de millones de espectadores mediante la TV, otros lo siguen por las redes y así. Pasión por la cita máxima que se celebra en Catar, ese país del Golfo Pérsico, tan rico como el Tío Rico MacPato, repleto de petróleo, de gas y con la portería política muy cerrada. Allí, los patronos del 95 % de la mano de obra retiran el pasaporte a los trabajadores, generalmente migrantes, les impiden cambiar de empresa o de trabajo, práctica que se llama kafala. No hay sindicatos, la homosexualidad es perseguida y puede costar a los infractores unos 7 años de prisión; las mujeres siguen sometidas al control masculino y precisan de un permiso para asistir a escuelas y universidades o para viajar. Pero, después de algunos arreglos con la FIFA, que muchos califican de cosméticos, Catar celebra el mundial de futbol. Y claro, si miramos el mapa del “mundo mundial” en el que sobran maquillajes: ¿dónde celebrar el Mundial? 

La gente desea escapar por un rato de la guerra en el Este europeo, de sus consecuencias económicas y financieras (precio del gas, gasolina, alimentos). También mirando patear el balón, no pocos canalizan la violencia reposada en sociedades y países. 

En Cuba, la afición oscila, según aprecio, entre España, Inglaterra, Brasil, Alemania y Holanda, Francia y Argentina. ¿Mi favorito? Como mi terruño no tiene equipo sobre el terreno, si gana uno de América Latina, triunfo. Los estoy viendo por el canal Telerebelde, claro, cuando hay electricidad. 

Y Energía, electricidad, están en el meollo de la gira  presidencial de Díaz-Canel y sus ministros. La crisis energética no ha pasado, prosiguen los apagones, situación que, como se dice, estaba cantada. Cuando no se cumplen los programas de mantenimiento en termoeléctricas sobrexplotadas… Pero semanas atrás, el gobierno alquiló otra termoflotante a una empresa turca (la séptima pues ya hay seis operando) de la cuales desconocemos el monto a facturar y demás detalles. Turquía está en la ruta del viaje de la comitiva presidencial. “¿Qué me preocupa de las “termoflotantes?” Me preguntó un amigo. Sencillamente entiendo que generalmente están concebidas para suplir contingencias, es decir desempeñan el papel de “emergentes, no de regulares” y aquí no es raro que los emergentes jueguen el partido completo. No lo deseo, pero me preocupa.  

Durante su estancia en Argelia, el presidente Amadjid Tebboune anunció a su homólogo cubano la condonación del pago por los servicios de la deuda y el aplazamiento de su rembolso para otro momento. También ofreció una central de paneles solares y combustible apara las termoeléctricas y demás necesidades, en buen romance: petróleo. Supongo que esos acuerdos anunciados venían cocinándose meses atrás, durante la visita del vicepresidente Ricardo Cabrisas. 

Cuando escribo estas notas, la delegación cubana se encuentra en Moscú, Rusia, país con el que se ha negociado y renegociado la deuda contraída. Hoy martes 22, se espera el encuentro entre Díaz-Canel y el presidente Putin. El objetivo claro: petróleo, inversiones, alimentos y la deuda… Hasta el momento de mi cierre, Díaz-Canel se ha entrevistado con dirigentes políticos y religiosos, habló en la Duma rusa, pero acuerdos nada se ha publicado aunque todo indica que siguen vigentes acuerdos hasta el 2030. La semana que viene deberemos comentar sobre novedades de esta visita que culminará en China.
