Natascha
Kampusch, a woman kidnapped and held prisoner for eight years by a
psycopath in Austria (a country that has given the world some of the
most notorious aberrant criminals), was once asked if she prayed
while in captivity. She said she did, until she discovered that her
captor also did.
"If
the criminal prays, I cannot pray."
Such
a simple statement represents one of the most intimate human
strengths. It’s either them or us.
That
statement is similar to the solution attributed to the Indian Hatuey
when the Spaniards offered him paradise if he renounced his ancestral
beliefs.
"If
the Spaniards go to heaven, I prefer to go to hell."
On
the other hand, we should remember the Zoroastrians, who believed in
the existence of two Gods, one evil, the other benign, of equal
dimension and in perpetual struggle. The criminal prays to his god.
Might Natascha have her own god? Her theorem reads: Either God does
not exist or we’re venerating the wrong god.
