The Washington Post is reporting that the Syrian government “welcomed a Russian proposal to avert U.S. military strikes by having Damascus turn over control of its chemical weapons to international monitors.”

The statement was issued by Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem and is the first indication that a diplomatic solution is possible that would avert an international situation which might lead to war.

The Post reported that “In Washington, deputy national security adviser Tony Blinken told reporters Monday that the United States ‘would welcome a decision and action by Syria to give up its chemical weapons.’ But he expressed skepticism that Syria would do so.”
