René in Cuba for good
HAVANA– RPA/Progreso Weekly – René González Sehwerert was notified Friday (May 3) that U.S. Federal Judge Joan Lenard has issued an order that will allow him to remain in Cuba for good, provided he renounces his U.S. citizenship.
Progreso Weekly received confirmation that the act of renunciation will be taking place shortly at the U.S. Interest Section in Havana. This was in fact what René suggested in a motion that his lawyer Philip Horowitz filed in Miami’s federal court.
René González, who was released from federal custody on October 7, 2011, has been under three years of supervised release in Miami, considered by many legal experts an act of extreme cruelty.
For several days González has been in Cuba after receiving a special permit due to the recent death of his father. Previously, on April, 2012, he was also allowed to travel to Havana for a few days to bid farewell to his brother Roberto González, who had a terminal cancer.
As soon as he renounces his U.S. citizenship, René González will be able to stay in his country of birth with his family, where he will serve the remainder of his probation without having to report to a parole officer in Florida.
