Cleaning the ocean by moving it through you (+Video)

MIAMI BEACH – I live in Miami Beach. I am surrounded by water. The ocean is my backyard. There’s the intra-coastal in front of me. And Biscayne Bay is what I stare at from my windows.

Recently I’ve read about plastic – not its advantages, but how it is killing the ocean and the life in it. And by coincidence, the Miami Herald, my hometown newspaper, is on a kick about crowdfunding – using the Internet and social media to fund projects we all deem important.

Then I ran into a 19-year-old man, Boyan Slat, who went diving in Greece and noticed all the plastic and garbage floating in the ocean, and had an idea that he just couldn’t let go of. He made it his mission to find a solution to clean it all up.

After lots of research and experimentation, he invented a method to clean up almost half of the great Pacific’s garbage patch in just 10 years, and founded the project called The Ocean Cleanup, which is now raising money for this cause. From what I understand, they’re half way to the 2 million dollars needed.
